Why Choose the Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy programme?

Introduction

Over the years, I’ve met countless people who felt drawn to counselling but weren’t sure if it was the right path for them, or even how to become a counsellor or psychotherapist in Ireland. Some were considering a complete career change, while others wanted to deepen their personal development, and many simply wanted to see if they had the right skills to support others. That’s exactly where the Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy comes in. It’s a practical, part-time course that allows you to explore the world of counselling in a supportive environment, without the immediate commitment of a full degree. That’s exactly where the Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy comes in.  a practical, part-time course that allows you to explore the world of counselling in a supportive environment, without the immediate commitment of a full degree. For many, it’s the first step on the journey to becoming a counsellor/psychotherapist and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

Overview & Structure

The Certificate runs over three months (in Spring, two in the Summer, and six in the Autumn), typically with one evening class per week. The structure is simple but effective:

  • Module 1: Personal development and foundational counselling skills.

This module is a journey of self-discovery. Including but not limited to looking inwards on the self. Uncovering and discovering why you are the way you are and why.

  • Module 2: An introduction to key therapeutic theories and practical skills.

Understanding the evolution of the profession through different theoretical lenses. At PCI, we have an integrated approach to the training.  Educating students on Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic perspectives and then integrating counselling skills.

Each class blends experiential learning with theory. That means you’re not only reading about counselling, but you’re also practising skills in real time, reflecting on your own growth, and learning alongside peers. For many students, this course provides their very first insight into the counselling skills in Ireland needed to progress into professional training.

Who Should Do It

This programme attracts a wide range of students. Some are complete beginners, curious about what counselling involves, and wanting to discover a deeper sense of self, but needing a structured introduction before they leap into something more long-term. Others already work in related fields like teaching, healthcare, HR and want to enhance their communication and empathy. Many are at a crossroads in their lives, considering a career change into counselling, but needing a structured introduction before they take the leap into degree-level study.

In my own teaching, I’ve seen how powerful this course can be for building confidence. Students often say they came in with uncertainty but left with clarity, whether that’s a decision to continue to the BSc (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy or to apply the skills in their current roles and relationships.

Benefits & Progression

The Certificate is more than an academic programme; it’s a journey of self-discovery. Students consistently report improvements in their listening, communication, and self-awareness. These aren’t just counselling skills; they’re life skills and can enrich the relationship with self and others.

For those who want to take things further, the Certificate provides a direct entry route into our BSc (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy. It’s recognised as foundational learning and gives you a strong platform to continue your studies. By completing the Certificate, you meet one of the entry requirements for counselling courses in Ireland, positioning yourself to continue towards accreditation with the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy.

Even if you don’t progress to degree level, the personal growth alone is worth it. One past student said, “the course positively changed how I relate to myself and others.”

Logistics (Entry, Locations, Starting Dates)

The Certificate is a part-time course, making it ideal for people balancing work, family, and other commitments. It’s available across multiple locations:

  • Athlone, Belfast, Carrick-on-Shannon, Cork, Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick, and also online.

Our next intake begins on 2 March 2026, with classes running weekly until June 2026. Entry requirements are straightforward: applicants should be mature, open to self-reflection, and have a good level of English language competence (IELTS or equivalent accepted).

Conclusion

If you’re asking yourself how to become a counsellor, this Certificate is often the very first step. It gives you the chance to test the waters, develop essential skills, and decide whether to progress to degree-level training. By meeting the entry requirements for counselling courses in Ireland, you open the door to a meaningful career path.

For some, it becomes the foundation for a rewarding career in counselling and psychotherapy. For others, it’s a life-changing personal development experience.
