How CPD Keeps Therapists Growing: Meeting IACP Requirements with Meaning

As counsellors and psychotherapists, we are well aware that our professional journey does not just end with accreditation. The work continues to evolve, shaped by our client needs, emerging new research, and the ethical commitment to best practice. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a key part of this process. For IACP accredited therapists, CPD is not simply an administrative duty but an ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth therefore safeguarding the clients, who seek our services.

The IACP requires members their members to complete 30 hours of CPD each year, with a minimum of 10 hours spent in formally structured learning such as workshops, lectures, training programmes, or conferences. The remaining hours can be drawn from a broader range of activities. Members are also expected to maintain a reflective CPD log of their CPD hours, noting not only what was undertaken but what was learned and how it influences their clinical practice. In this way, CPD is kept firmly aligned with the core values of our profession, which includes reflection, growth, and integrity in service of our clients.

When approached with intention, CPD offers more than just compliance. It provides a space for therapists to reengage and reconnect with their curiosity, providing a sense of inspiration, thus maintaining the vitality of therapeutic work. It also reduces the possibility of burnout and professional stagnation by keeping us open to emerging theory, ethical requirements, and aware of cultural contexts. It is also a form of self-care, reminding us that staying resourced, supported, and connected to our professional community is essential if we are to accompany clients with presence and resilience.

At PCI College, we understand that meaningful CPD must be both practical and interesting. Our programmes are designed with practicing therapists in mind, offering workshops that combine depth with accessibility. Our facilitators are all experienced practitioners who bring their clinical wisdom directly into the training space, ensuring that the learning is grounded and relevant. Whether engaging in CPD online or in person, participants consistently tell us that what they value most is not only the knowledge gained but also the sense of inspiration and professional connection that comes with being part of a larger learning community.

Choosing how to meet CPD requirements can itself be a reflective process. Therapists might ask themselves, “What areas of my work feel do I feel most connected to” or “curious about right now?”, “Where do I feel less confident or where am I challenged in this work?”, In this way, CPD becomes a pathway not just in meeting the IACP standards, but in strengthening the therapeutic sense of self.

Ultimately, the IACP’s CPD requirements remind us that professional development is a lifelong journey. They call on us to remain responsive, engaged, and ethically attuned, thus ensuring the highest standards of practice are maintained. At PCI College, our commitment is to support therapists in that journey by providing CPD that is flexible, relevant, and rooted in the values of our profession. Meeting requirements matters, but what matters even more is how we allow CPD to inspire us, connect us, and sustain us in the work that we do.
