    Understanding neurodiversity in a counselling setting or Supporting Neurodiversity and neurodivergences (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, Tourette’s syndrome)

    This introductory workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of neurodiversity, its intersection with other identities, and strategies for adapting therapeutic approaches.

    Participants will learn about:

    • The definition and medical vs. social models of neurodiversity
    • Common neurodivergent traits/characteristics and different presentations
    • Neurodivergent Differences in sensory processing and executive functioning
    • The impact of ableism, mentalism, and implicit biases on therapy

    Adapting therapeutic approaches and the therapy room to be more neurodiversity affirming
    By attending this workshop, therapists will gain valuable insights and practical tools to enhance their ability to support neurodivergent clients and create a more inclusive and affirming therapeutic environment.

    Course Content

    • Medical vs. Social; Models of neurodiversity
    • Common neurodivergent conditions and how they typically present
    • Sensory processing and executive functioning in neurodivergent individuals
    • The impact of ableism, mentalism, and implicit biases on therapy
    • Adapting therapeutic approaches and the therapy room to be more neurodiversity affirming
    • Working with individual strengths and differences

    Eligibility

    This is a CPD workshop specifically designed for Counsellors & Psychotherapist or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience and students currently in professional training. BSc Counselling & Psychotherapy students in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of their studies are all invited to apply for this CPD workshop.

    IT Skills

    Students require sufficient IT skills to complete the course.

    Students can expect to be provided with advice and support concerning any learning difficulties that they may encounter. Any diagnosed learning difficulty, e.g. dyslexia, must be noted on the application.
