Loss And Grief – Sitting With A Grieving Client
One of the biggest challenges for any therapist can be sitting with a heavily grieving client. There can be a strong impulse to try to help, to try to “improve” or some way attempt to “fix” an unfixable situation.
We live in a culture of ‘moving on’, which can isolate the grieving person even further, sometimes with catastrophic consequences. Grieving is a process. Whether it be the loss of a home, a marriage, the striking finality of death, or even an addiction, a loss can be the most difficult emotion for a therapist to sit with. One of the main frustrations is around knowing whether or not we are being in any way effective. This course invites exploration into the process of loss and grief in the counselling room, including delving into the therapist’s own experiences of loss and grief.
Who is this course for?
This course is for counsellors and psychotherapists, including those in training, who are interested in learning more about grief and how it presents in the therapy room.
What are the benefits of doing this course?
Participants will gain a theoretical understanding of the manifestation of loss and grief. In addition to this, an experiential approach to grief and loss will be undertaken, inviting participants to gain insight into their own relationship with loss. As a result, participants will deepen their insight in this area when sitting with a grieving client.
Course Content
This one day workshop will look at some contemporary theorists and how their work can be applied in a clinical setting, as well as taking some time to look at the therapists own relationship with grief and the grieving process.
