Learning Outcomes
It is envisaged that people who successfully complete the Diploma in Suicide Studies will:
- Know the facts about suicide and attempted suicide and deliberate self harm, and be able to distinguish between those facts and the myths that surround this way of ending or attempting to end one’s own life.
- Have the ability to identify the psychological, biological and environmental factors, combined with negative life experiences and exacerbating recent life events that increase the risk of suicidal tendencies.
- Learn how to apply the key skills and strategies associated with the special types of preventative measures, interventions, and grieving processes associated with suicide in an effective and sensitive way.
- Become increasingly aware of their own management of shame, loneliness, and despair as well as of loss, grief, and bereavement.
- Be self-directing as helpers who can take initiative in showing care, concern and support for the suicidal and the bereaved.
- Appreciate that when this course is completed, they are really at the beginning of the learning that comes from the practical application of the theories, skills and approaches they have learned.
- Feel sufficiently confident to offer help and support when approached for help and support by those contemplating ending their own lives and those bereaved by suicide

Anne Burke received a BSc in Psychotherapy/Counselling from Middlesex University and has recently been awarded an MSc in Psychotherapy Studies by the University of Sheffield. Anne also has professional certificates in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and The Treatment of Sexual Addiction. She is a fully accredited therapist with IACP, IAHIP, EAPA, IAPPC and is also a Practitioner of Therapeutic Play.
Anne has also completed further training in the area of Suicide Intervention and works as a Psychotherapist at the Johnstown Therapy Centre, Dun Laoghaire, where she is also a Director.
