Certificate in Substance Addiction 

Eligibility:
Qualification in Counselling, Psychotherapy or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience. . Students currently in training will be considered, on the understanding that the Certificate qualification cannot be used until they have qualified.Entry is by application form.

• to impart information on drugs, what they are, how they work and how they effect people;
• to understand the family context of addiction;
• to be familiar with the dominant theories on addiction;
• to be able to distinguish one substance from another;
• to understand the dynamics of addiction;
• to be familiar with a range of treatment approaches;
• to feel competent to recognise, work with or refer the problem as presented;
• to know the legal context of substance abuse;
• to be aware of related health issues e.g. H.I.V., Hepatitis

Skills

• On the completion of this module the participants will have:
• gained extensive knowledge on a wide range of abusable substances;
• developed key skills, including that of being able to establish tough, strong, respectful relationships, the skill of direct, clear communication, confrontation with deep respect etc.,
• studied a variety of treatment modalities;
• learned how to draw up an individual treatment plan, and be able to implement it.

Assessment
1. Visit an appropriate treatment service and make a 30 minute presentation to your class-group on this experience.
2. Write an essay of approximately 2,500 words on the rehabilitation of substance addicts and in your work.

Fees: €750 (€500 for PCI College Students and Graduates)

Fees are non-refundable in all personal circumstances. All courses run subject to demand and the formation of a viable class cohort. A full refund will be given to all applicants in the event that the class does not proceed.
