Certificate in Substance Addiction 

Trainees will be enabled to impart information on addictive substances and how they affect people.

This 30 hour programme consists of five one-day workshops, each of 6 hours duration.

They will explore case work with particular emphasis on the impact of substance addiction on the individual, the family and the community.


 

Course Details

The development of counselling skills, the resilient relationship necessary for this work and the ability to set out treatment plans for individual cases will receive particular attention.

Counsellors will be equipped with the knowledge to enable them recognise the presence of addiction issues in the story of a client, to enable them work with the addiction issue or to make an appropriate referral.

Course Content

 

  • Drug Types: Pharmacological Categorisation; how they work; their effects.
  • Legal Perspective: The misuse of Drugs Act (Ireland); similarities and variances with the laws of other countries.
  • The legalisation of Cannabis and other drugs debate.
  • Addiction Research: Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and the United States.
  • The Causes of Addiction.
  • A Rage of Treatment Modalities: Philosophies and Practices.
  • The Family Context of addiction.
  • Counselling Skills, particularly associated with addiction work.
  • Health-Related Issues e.g. H.I.V., Hepatitis.
  • The Addictive Personality?
  • Personal Factors enhancing recover.
  • The role of Support Groups e.g. A.A., N.A., G.A., Al Anon etc.
  • After-care.

Assessed Award:

PCI COLLEGE CERT IN SUBSTANCE ADDICTION

 

Eligibility:
Qualification in Counselling, Psychotherapy or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience. . Students currently in training will be considered, on the understanding that the Certificate qualification cannot be used until they have qualified.Entry is by application form.
