Psychotherapy at the Movies

Talking back to the Screen

Course Details

This workshop will look at how the cinema enters the therapy space and the various effects it can have there. We will also look at how therapy has entered the cinema and how it has been depicted there, and how that can shape the expectations of today’s clients. Working within that dialogue we will examine the implications of this ‘gaze’ for conceptualisations of self, the body and relationships. Using case illustrations, we will explore theoretically and clinically, the various positions the therapist can take.

Our clients have been impacted, shaped and traumatised by many phenomena – parents, family, school, work – but do we, as therapists, take enough account of the role that the moving images of film (and TV, Netflix, YouTube etc) play in the structures of the modern psyche?

Particpents will learn to hear what the client is saying about her / himself when they speak about film and look at film from various theoretical perspectives. You will reflect on how cinematic representations of therapy create expectations in our clients
