Course Details

Sexual Addiction problems, especially in relation to the Internet, but also in connection with prostitution, multiple affairs etc, are being encountered more and more by counsellors/psychotherapists and other helping professionals in Ireland these days. This module is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work competently with clients who present with issues classified as Sexual Addictions (the terms Sexual Compulsivity and Compulsive Sexual Behaviour are also sometimes used), which can be defined as ‘…Some form of sexual behaviour in a pattern that was characterised by recurrent failure to control the behaviour and continuation of the behaviour despite significant harmful consequences’ (Goodman, 1998).

Syllabus

Students will become familiar with the following in relation to Sexual Addiction:

  • Definitions, Signs/Symptoms, Types, Consequences and Developmental Roots, Gender differences
  • Approaches, including Carnes’ Tasks, Cognitive-Behavioural Strategies, Client Education, Wheel of Change
  • The importance of the therapeutic relationship in sexual addiction counselling
  • Legal Issues – disclosure etc
  • Long-term Recovery issues such as Intimacy/Healthy Sexuality, Relationship Skills, Dealing with Trauma
  • Family issues: Partners/Couples/Children

Assessed Award:

PCI COLLEGE CERT IN SEXUAL ADDICTION

 

Eligibility:
Qualification in Counselling, Psychotherapy or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience. . Students currently in training will be considered, on the understanding that the Certificate qualification cannot be used until they have qualified.Entry is by application form.
