Certificate in Sexual Addiction

For helping professionals who want to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to work competently with those who are struggling with compulsive sexual behaviours.

Course Details

Sexual Addiction problems, especially in relation to the Internet, but also in connection with prostitution, multiple affairs etc, are being encountered more and more by counsellors/psychotherapists and other helping professionals in Ireland these days. This module is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work competently with clients who present with issues classified as Sexual Addictions (the terms Sexual Compulsivity and Compulsive Sexual Behaviour are also sometimes used), which can be defined as ‘…Some form of sexual behaviour in a pattern that was characterised by recurrent failure to control the behaviour and continuation of the behaviour despite significant harmful consequences’ (Goodman, 1998).

Syllabus

Students will become familiar with the following in relation to Sexual Addiction:

Definitions, Signs/Symptoms, Types, Consequences and Developmental Roots, Gender differences
Approaches, including Carnes’ Tasks, Cognitive-Behavioural Strategies, Client Education, Wheel of Change
The importance of the therapeutic relationship in sexual addiction counselling
Legal Issues – disclosure etc
Long-term Recovery issues such as Intimacy/Healthy Sexuality, Relationship Skills, Dealing with Trauma
Family issues: Partners/Couples/Children

Eligibility Learning Outcomes Fees Lecturers

Eligibility:
Qualification in Counselling, Psychotherapy or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience. . Students currently in training will be considered, on the understanding that the Certificate qualification cannot be used until they have qualified.Entry is by application form.

Knowledge
On completing of this module, trainees will be able to:

Critically outline current theories of compulsive sexual behaviours
Compare and contrast sexual addiction problems with other addictive and compulsive disorders
Analyse the role of the Internet in sexual addiction problems.

Skills
On completion of this module, trainees will be able to:
Recognise and assess possible sexual addiction issues in a client’s life

Work with sexual addiction issues or make an appropriate referral.
Use relevant skills in dealing with early and later stages of recovery

Assessment
Students are required to write an essay of 5,000 words on the theory and practice of counselling/psychotherapy for sexual addicts, with particular reference to the similarities and differences in relation to counselling/psychotherapy for substance addicts.

Fees: €750
Fees are non-refundable in all personal circumstances. All courses run subject to demand and the formation of a viable class cohort. A full refund will be given to all applicants in the event that the class does not proceed.

Eoin Stephens MA, MIACP, MIAAAC:
A leading Irish Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and CBT Trainer, Eoin has worked in the area of mental health and psychotherapy for more than 25 years. He is President of PCI College, one of Ireland’s leading providers of counselling and psychotherapy courses, and a Director of CBT Solutions therapy practice in Clondalkin. Eoin has a particular interest in the relationship between addictions and mental health problems such anxiety and depression, and is a co-founder of Dual Diagnosis Ireland. He is also well known for his therapy, training and media work in the field of behavioural addictions, and is a director of the Addictive Behaviours Centre.
