About the Programme : This comprehensive certificate training for graduates’ looks at working effectively with under 18’s in the field of counselling & psychotherapy. This is a modular based training and students will need to allocate time outside of the course for further study and assignments. Students also engage in clinical placement work along with clinical supervision in order to meet with the course requirement of 100 client hours. Students also have the opportunity to explore creative mediums such as music, art/clay, sand tray and therapeutic stories as part of this experiential training. The course is underpinned by theory and lifespan development relevant to working with young people.
Duration: This certificate will be run over 5 modules of 30 hours each giving 150 hours of contact teaching.

Additional Course Requirements
- 100 hours or working with clients
- This course will include group supervision (during the course); additional costs will include 1-1 therapy (recommended) and individual 20 supervision hours (requirement).
- There will be an assignment after each module.
Safety requirements for those working with minors (u 18’s)
For those applicants that do not have current Garda Clearance it will be necessary to provide a statement from the Gardaí showing any details of information held on them in the Garda Criminal Records Database.
Professional Insurance:
All students will be required to secure professional insurance cover prior to undertaking direct work with children. A listing of current insurers is available; all applicants are required to adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy or equivalent.

This course is recommended for teachers, guidance counsellors, youth
workers, social workers, social care workers, psychologists and
counsellors & psychotherapists and others working with children and
adolescents.
It is necessary to have a prior 3rd level qualification placed at level 7
on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) or higher.
*** For those who do not meet these entry requirements, applications based on experiential learning may be considered on a case by case basis; these applications must include 500 word submission of why you wish to engage in this training to be considered.
To introduce students to play as a medium for communication and to also learn current requirements of child protection in Ireland following Children’s First guidelines as part of best practice in their clinical work with young people.
To link the developmental stages of play to theory. To understand through exploration of child development the importance of play for self expression
To introduce students to the medium of Sandplay therapy. This will be experiential in nature and students will be expected to participate in working groups throughout this module.
To explore the medium of art as a therapeutic tool and gain an understanding of children’s art through research based examples.
To learn from the most up to date material available methods for supporting parents in working effectively with their child, thus supporting the therapeutic process – as Landreth says, “Parents are the agents of change for the child”
