A Tribute to Liam McCarthy

28.06.2010

THE MAN I KNEW AS LIAM
by Willie Egan

My first day in class ....didn’t feel very good
At the top of the room, this gentleman stood
Where I said I couldn’t ...he said I could
The man I came to know as Liam

Where I saw little ...he saw a lot
What I overlooked ...he gently caught
Saw the white page where I only a dot
The man I knew as Liam

A father, a teacher ...a wonderful friend
Every meeting ...something new to be learned
Where straight wouldn’t fit, he knew how to bend
The man I knew as Liam

He rarely accepted a simple “No”
There was always another way to go
And miracles happened for me, I know
Because of the man named Liam

He knew how to turn a life around
A smile...a hand ... never a frown
Only saw “up” where others “down”
The man I knew as Liam

He believed we all can turn lives around
Help broken wings to leave the ground
People like him are hard to be found
The man we knew as Liam

When it came to wonder-teachers
For some it was only a dream
But we’ve had the best ...the very best
The man we all knew as Liam
