The Internet & Mental Health
As a “place” where many people now spend a lot of their time, the Internet has taken on a huge relevance for mental health, in both positive and negative ways.
On the positive side, a wide range of mental health information and support resources are now available online, including online support groups and online counselling.
On the negative side, there are also risks to mental health involved in using the Internet, including possibilities such as social avoidance, dangerous relationships, and addictions to pornography, gambling or gaming.
This lecture takes a look at the current situation and it’s relevance to helping professionals. The emphasis will be on gaining familiarity with both the resources and the risks, so that we can be of more help to our clients.
