Connection Profile - Spunout.ie

SpunOut.ie is Ireland’s youth information website created by young people, for young people.

We provide information to around 80,000 active readers each month.

Established in 2005, our vision is help create an Ireland where young people aged between 16 and 25 are empowered with the information they need to live active, happy, and healthy lives.

We aim to educate and inform our readers about the importance of holistic wellbeing and how good health can be maintained, both physically and mentally.

We believe we should have easy access to relevant, reliable, and non-judgemental information and we are proud to provide our readers with a dynamic, responsive website full of up-to-date, factual information, free of any shame or bias.

What we do

On SpunOut.ie we provide information on a range of different topics broken down into sections; education, employment, health, life and opinion.

Our editorial team pen all of our professionally proofed factsheets and consult with relevant subject matter experts and other young people to ensure we provide factual and up-to-date information to our readership. SpunOut.ie also provides a space for young people to have their voices heard and to share their life experiences with other young people. We do this by publishing articles written by readers aged 16 to 25 in the Opinion section on the site.

We also engage our peers in campaigns, at events and through the media on issues which affect us.
Who are we?

SpunOut.ie is led by its reader community and young volunteers.

A group of 20 young people from around the country form the SpunOut.ie Action Panel which provides leadership to the organisation.

A pool of 400 young people volunteer their time to the work of the organisation through writing and proofing content, making videos and giving feedback.

Our team of seven staff manage the day-to-day running of SpunOut.ie and rely on reader analytics and the SpunOut.ie Action Panel to provide us with the direction and leadership to stay in touch with the views and needs of the readers we serve. The staff facilitate the mechanism for our young leaders to be heard and then follow their lead.

SpunOut.ie also has a voluntary board of professional types who take responsibility for the good governance of the organisation. The board also ensures we stay true to our mission to be a website by young people, for young people.

In 2016, we developed information campaigns on areas including self-harm, suicide, anxiety, exercise and employment. We received 1,578,112 unique pageviews to the website in 2015.

Most recently, we launched our project ‘Compass’, which aims to connect young people with education and employment opportunities. What makes Compass unique from other employment tools is that it recognises the barriers certain young people may face when seeking employment, including challenges to their mental health. As such, the tool presents information on help-seeking and positive mental health alongside employment information in order to meet this need.

What our Students Say

This was by far the best workshop I have attended. I loved the practical side and reading out to fellow class mates. I will use the skill i have learnt for my own personal development and for future clients
