BSc (Hons) in
Addiction Counselling Upgrade Programme

For Qualified Addiction Counsellors or Qualified Counsellors/Psychotherapists who want to complete an honours degree in just two years

Irish Association of Alchohol & Addiction Counsellors

  • Accreditation: BSc (Hons) Degree in Addiction Counselling is validated by Middlesex University and recognised by the IAAAC.    

  • Venue: Dublin West, Dublin City Centre, Kilkenny, Athlone and Cork. *Please note that some Catch-Up Modules may be in Dublin only.

  • Duration: Two year programme part time.

  • Award: Middlesex University BSc (Hons) in Addiction Counselling

  • Tuition Fees: Please download the application form for details of fees and application process. In order to facilitate students, PCI College introduced a Payment Plan. The course can be paid in 3 fixed payments due in September, November & February. There is no extra charge for this option.

  • Who should consider our upgrade course?  This course is designed for qualified counsellors (including diploma graduates from other Addiction counselling training institutes) who wish to add to their qualifications and gain an honours degree.

This programme is designed for qualified counsellors (including Diploma graduates from other Addiction Counselling training institutes) who wish to add to their qualifications and gain an honours degree.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed:

  • A diploma with addiction counselling at its core or a diploma with counselling & psychotherapy at its core.

Applicants must supply supporting documentation to verify completion of:

  • At least 100 hours of work with clients
  • 20 sessions with a qualified supervisor to review client work.
  • 50 hours of personal therapy

Entry is by application form and interview

Course Content

YEAR 1 & 2 Catch-Up Modules

Upgrade students enter the degree programme in year three and receive a general exemption from year one and year two modules. Catch-Up Modules may be required based on the Course Comparison Form on page 5 of the application form.
Please note that Students with a General Counselling Diploma must complete the addiction module from Year 1 (Addiction: Theories and Approaches). This module is run in Dublin West only on a Weekend basis.

YEAR 3

  • Family/Systemic Counselling: Theory & Skills
  • Research Methods
  • Personal & Professional Development

YEAR 4

  • Clinical Placement - Case Study
  • Proposition Essay

Plus two other modules:

  • Drug Abuse in Ireland
  • Sexual Addictions
  • Dual Diagnosis

Additional Course Requirements:
      At least 400 hours of work with clients (including hours completed for Diploma)
      Attend 100 sessions with a qualified supervisor to review your client work (including hours completed for Diploma)
      100 hours of personal therapy (including hours completed for Diploma)


Award: MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY BSc (Hons) in ADDICTION COUNSELLING  (Level 8 NFQ)

Professional Qualification recognised by the IAAAC (Irish Association of Alcohol & Addiction Counsellors)
