  • Please note that this is a Continuing Professional Development course and does not qualify you as a Counsellor.
  • Specific Entry Requirements: The course is designed for people who are currently offering or who intend to offer their services in the area of Suicide Prevention. Entry is by application form or book online

About the Course

Participants will gain sufficient knowledge, skills strategies, and theoretical background to enable them to serve those who are at risk of taking their own lives, those who are survivors of suicide, and the family members of those who have taken their lives.

Learning Outcomes

It is envisaged that people who successfully complete the Professional Certificate in Suicide Studies will:

  • To Know the facts about suicide and attempted suicide and deliberate self harm, and be able to distinguish between those facts and the myths that surround this way of ending or attempting to end one's own life.
  • Have the ability to identify the psychological, biological and environmental factors, combined with negative life experiences and exacerbating recent life events that increase the risk of suicidal tendencies.
  • Learn how to apply the key skills and strategies associated with the special types of preventative measures, interventions, and grieving processes associated with suicide in an effective and sensitive way.

Programme Leader




Anne Burke received a BSc in Psychotherapy/Counselling from Middlesex University and has recently been awarded an MSc in Psychotherapy Studies by the University of Sheffield. Anne also has professional certificates in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and The Treatment of Sexual Addiction.  She is a fully accredited therapist with IACP, IAHIP, EAPA, IAPPC and is also a Practitioner of Therapeutic Play. Anne has also completed further training in the area of Suicide Intervention and works as a Psychotherapist at the Johnstown Therapy Centre, Dun Laoghaire, where she is also a Director.
